  • in light of the fact that whales are an endangered species and species, and that some countries are trying to violate the international ban on whaling, i find it extremely difficult in finding any humor in the situation.

  • Even though I’m a Dave Barry fan, I had not seen the exploding whale article, thank you for posting it! I knew about the whale, of course, can’t live in Oregon without hearing about it. I did not, however, realize that the Dept. of Transportation was responsible. As I gaze out my window at the pot holes big enough to be roomy for Keiko to use as a lap pool, it all becomes clearer now!

  • I cannot describe, how surprised and happy I am to find this pages. Two years ago I worked as a trainee in the news department of a German public radio station. I had to collect news from the teleprinter, sort out the important and formulate the texts for the radio news show. On July, 29th 1998 I found a short message by “dpa” (Deutsche Presse Agentur) (like American Press) about an exploding whale near Bastia, which is the capital of Korsika, an island in the Meditteranean sea. The message was about five lines long and said: The french marine blew up a the carcass of a perished whale on the coast of Korsika. It needed 500 kg explosive, said the police on Thursday. The nine tuns weighing animal stranded on Wednesday 30 kilometer south of Bastia an could not be rescued. (Sorry for my English) This message was not considered to be important for our listeners, but I took it home and could’nt forget it. I stopped working in the news department, and changed into a free lanced radioplay and documentary author. Two month ago, I rememembered this new s and decided to use this message for a radioplay. (I have never heard anything before about exploding whale pages). I made interviews with sixteen people, whom I asked to imagine what to do with a stranded whale. (some wanted to burn them, some wanted to burry them, cut them, or give them to an exhibition and so on). After a while I gave gentle hints to think of an explosion. And I also let them estimate the weight of the whale the amount of explosive and asked which day of the week would be the best. I played all of these recorded answers on my hard disc and made a collage mixed with music and sounds of under water bubbles . In the beginning of this play you don’t know what people are talking about, but after a few minutes it becomes clear, and the l isteners slowly get into this absolutely fascinating picture of an exploding whale. Last week I won a competiton for radioplays with my piece. And some hours ago I got a message with a link to your webside. I was sure to be the only person who discovered the humour of this bizarre story, but now I am happy to see, that there are more people with this special sense for exploding whales. Does anybody know more about the exploding whale of Korsika?

That version ended showing the reporters and others covered by a fine spray of rotten whale blood and pieces. It is far, far funnier than the Quicktime version. Does anyone know how or where I can get a copy (VHS or digital) of that original newscast?

I am offended with Tasmania and the way that a crazy bastard like MARTIN BRYANT was aloud to live in the community, even though they knew he was a loose canon. The SYDNEY OLYMPIC GAMES were going to include Whale Exploding as an event in the out-back but too many countrys pulled out just before the DRUG testing.

  • Nice site – well done; a good laugh. I think that all those tree-huggers should accept that a dead whale needed to be cleared away, and stop blubbering about it 🙂 Speaking of dead whales, Charles (future king of England) is (dis)affectionately known in Wales (the country) as “The prince of dead whales”, since apparently he actually owns all whale carcasses washed up on the beaches of Wales.

Another of Barry’s finds that is equally hilarious to this is the worlds fastest bar-b-que grill lighting contest. Use infoseek and look up liquid oxygen bar-b-que. • I first saw this site at Classroom Connect seminar in 1998. My partner and I wound up using it for a spectacular science/math/social studies lesson, which took 1 hour and 45 minutes, that integrated all areas of the curriculum. Those students will n ever forget the concepts and ideas that were discovered in that time. Additionally, most went home to share this “explosive” unit with their parents!! When the final component (the actual viewing of the Exploding Whale) was presented, it led to a wonder ful exploration and discussion of atmospheric conditions, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and galaxies (which was enhanced by displays of Hubble Space Telescope images from http://www.nasa.gov). The video can be freeze-framed at any point to help facili tate any lesson. I have also made this video clip known to many of my colleagues and let them be aware of how it could facilitate the lessons in their own classrooms. I heartily suggest it to any classroom teacher for use in many cross-curricular units! !

  • Well, in Washington state there have been several whales floating ashore quite dead. Oregon has set precedence. Could you imagine our state politician who recently had a whale pull up dead on his beachside property choosing this method of removal?! On ly that could be funnier. Unless of course one day the politician ended up as president . . .

  • this really points up the deterioration in efficacy in our local administrations since 1970; used to be anyone with a creative idea could just go ahead & try it…nowadays if a decision doesn’t get stalled by liability fears, it will be compromised t o death in committee meetings. If it happens at all it will cost three times as much & have no where near the entertainment value! (1970: dead whale? no problem, BLOW IT UP! 1999: ‘NEW CARISSA’? Oh dear, have lots of committe meetings and SORT OF blo w it up…)

  • What a hoot. That has to be one of the funniest stories I’ve seen in awhile. Another government project gone awry. Go figure. Maybe instead of calling it the Exploding Whale, it should be called Geppetto’s Revenge…… Only in America
